The Laboratory of Molecular and Translational Oncology is a research group established in 2004 by Dr. PereGascon to study the relationship between neuropeptides, in particular the tachykinins and tumoral progression as well as mechanisms of metastasis in breast cancer (research funded by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III- FISS 041353, FISS PI080022, FISS PI12/01706). It is noteworthy that from these studies a patent was also created --PCT/ES2009/00019; EUROPE (USA pending) --. New lines of interest have been implemented since then; indeed a new research line based on the origin of tumor heterogeneity in breast cancer has been recently started in the lab. This research line began as a result of the confluence of the studies performed by Dra. Vanessa Almendro during her long stage in the laboratory of Dr. Kornellia Polyak in the Dana Farber Cancer Institute (Harvard Medical School, Boston, US)(2008-2013) and Dr. Pere Gascón previous research, focused in the role of the microenvironment in tumor progression and metastasis. At present, the study of chemoresistance mechanisms is also an active area of research, as evidenced by the related publications of the last years, and a new project aimed to study the epigenetic mechanisms involved in acquired chemoresistance is currently undergoing (funded by FISS PI11/01234) in the lab.
